Guardian Angel – The Highest in Window Bar Safety Standards

We are often asked by architects and builders about safety standards and codes.  Guardian Angel products meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specification F2090-10, which establishes the installation, safety, performance, and labeling requirements for devices intended to address the risk of injury or death associated with accidental falls from windows.  ASTM International is the premier globally recognized developer and provider of voluntary consensus standards that promote public health, safety, and overall quality of life as well as contributing to the reliability of materials, products, systems and services.

For many years, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and ASTM International have partnered to protect people through the use of standards.  You can learn more about their collaborative efforts here.  Also, many states and municipalities have incorporated ASTM standards into their building codes.

Guardian Angel Window Guards pass all of the requirements laid out in ASTM F2090-10; and to our knowledge they are the only manufacturer with that distinction in the US.  Below is some more specific information about ASTM F2090-10:

Overview of ASTM F2090 – 10 Standard Specification for Window Fall Prevention Devices With Emergency Escape (Egress) Release Mechanisms:

First, here’s some text taken directly from the ASTM specification overview:

“This specification establishes the installation, safety, performance, and labeling requirements for devices intended to address the risk of injury and death associated with accidental falls from windows by children five years old and younger. It applies to window fall prevention devices that are to be used on any window, including those that are designated for emergency escape (egress) and rescue (ingress). It is, however, not intended to meet the unique requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).”
“This specification applies to window fall prevention devices, including window opening control devices, window fall prevention screens, and fall prevention window guards, that are to be used on any windows, including those that are designated for emergency escape (egress) and rescue (ingress).”

Here’s an overview of the specific requirements – all passed by Guardian Angel window guards:

  • There must be less than 4 inches of space between bars to prevent small children from crawling through.
  • The window guard must have emergency release mechanisms clearly marked on the guard.
  • To protect against unintentional operation by a young child, the release mechanism must be operated either by two independent single actions, or one dual action.
  • The mechanism must be easily used without special tools or force, and the force required to release the mechanism should not exceed 15 lbs of force.
  • The release mechanism must automatically reset.
  • The window guard must pass a pendulum test with 150 lbs of force.
  • The after market devices must contain installation, operating, and safety instructions in the packaging.

Window-bars.com was invited to comment in an industry-wide press release issued by one of the leading child safety window bar manufacturers, Automatic Specialties, Inc., maker of Guardian Angel products:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Children Falling From Windows Nationwide In Record Numbers

Guardian Angel Window Guards Launches Awareness Campaign Preventing Tragic Window Falls

MARLBOROUGH, Mass (July 16, 2011) – On June 27, a 3-year-old boy was injured after he fell out of a second-story window, according to San Bernardino County Fire officials in California.

On June 30, Peoria police were dispatched to 1620 NE Madison Avenue on reports that a one-year-old child had fallen from a second story window in Illinois.

On July 7, a two-year-old boy was taken to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital after falling out a second story window in Cleveland, Ohio. On the same day in Springfield, Ohio, authorities said a 6-year-old girl is recovering at Children’s Medical Center in Dayton after she fell twenty feet out a second-story window. On the same day in Des Moines, Iowa, a 4-year-old boy was taken to a Des Moines medical center after falling out a third-story window to the ground.

A child’s fall from a second story window on July 10 in Portland, Oregon is bringing pleas from firefighters for parents to become aware of the problem.

In a crucial effort to build awareness for this preventable childhood tragedy, Guardian Angel Window Guards is launching a national awareness campaign to prevent tragic window falls.

“Child-proofing the home most often involves baby gates at stairwells, locking cabinets, and covering electrical outlets, yet, securing windows to prevent falls is chronically overlooked,” said Jane Robichaud of Automatic Specialties, Inc, maker of Guardian Angel Window Guards. “Window screens are not enough and children will only be protected by installing ASTM-certified window guards designed to be removed quickly in case of fire or emergency.”

The company has embarked on a social media campaign on Facebook and Twitter @Window_Guards to promote safety and to chronicle the nationwide reports of these incidents. Guardian Angel Window Guards also created a donation program for families whose child has unfortunately suffered an accidental window fall, extending a gift of two window guards at no cost.

“The Guardian Angel Window Guards’ donation program is a wonderful gift to families who have experienced their child falling from a window,” said Jan Berichon, COTA/L, health educator for The Safety Store and Resource Center at The Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel. “When this tragedy occurs, families are often fearful, anxious and at a loss for solutions - window guards and stops that meet ASTM standards provide families the safest solutions for improving the safety of their homes.”

“The Safety Store at The Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in Portland, Oregon is committed to teaching our community about window safety,” Berichon said.

Guardian Angel Window Guards are designed with less than 4 inches of space between bars to prevent small children from crawling through. End posts attach to window frames with screws so the guard is installed securely. Release buttons are secure from curious little fingers but allow for quick removal by adults in case of emergency. The patented design enables fire fighters to easily remove the guard from the outside in the event of fire.

Constructed of durable steel that can withstand the weight of a child, Guardian Angel Window Guards are easily installed with a screwdriver or drill and feature sliding bars which fit windows of various widths and heights. Multiple guards can be stacked or installed next to each other to cover extra wide or extra high openings. The guards are available in a sleek glossy white finish that does not interfere with décor.

“Many of our customers, both retail and contractor, seek out Guardian Angel Window Guards,” said James Ide, president of online child safety supplier www.Window-Bars.com. “This is due to the wide range of sizes which can fit almost any window, a finish that exudes quality, the simplicity of installation, and the innovative way the child safety mechanism operates.”
