We are often asked by architects and builders about safety standards and codes. Guardian Angel products meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specification F2090-10, which establishes the installation, safety, performance, and labeling requirements for devices intended to address the risk of injury or death associated with accidental falls from windows. ASTM International is the premier globally recognized developer and provider of voluntary consensus standards that promote public health, safety, and overall quality of life as well as contributing to the reliability of materials, products, systems and services.
For many years, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and ASTM International have partnered to protect people through the use of standards. You can learn more about their collaborative efforts here. Also, many states and municipalities have incorporated ASTM standards into their building codes.
Guardian Angel Window Guards pass all of the requirements laid out in ASTM F2090-10; and to our knowledge they are the only manufacturer with that distinction in the US. Below is some more specific information about ASTM F2090-10:
Overview of ASTM F2090 – 10 Standard Specification for Window Fall Prevention Devices With Emergency Escape (Egress) Release Mechanisms:
First, here’s some text taken directly from the ASTM specification overview:
“This specification establishes the installation, safety, performance, and labeling requirements for devices intended to address the risk of injury and death associated with accidental falls from windows by children five years old and younger. It applies to window fall prevention devices that are to be used on any window, including those that are designated for emergency escape (egress) and rescue (ingress). It is, however, not intended to meet the unique requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).”
“This specification applies to window fall prevention devices, including window opening control devices, window fall prevention screens, and fall prevention window guards, that are to be used on any windows, including those that are designated for emergency escape (egress) and rescue (ingress).”
Here’s an overview of the specific requirements – all passed by Guardian Angel window guards:
- There must be less than 4 inches of space between bars to prevent small children from crawling through.
- The window guard must have emergency release mechanisms clearly marked on the guard.
- To protect against unintentional operation by a young child, the release mechanism must be operated either by two independent single actions, or one dual action.
- The mechanism must be easily used without special tools or force, and the force required to release the mechanism should not exceed 15 lbs of force.
- The release mechanism must automatically reset.
- The window guard must pass a pendulum test with 150 lbs of force.
- The after market devices must contain installation, operating, and safety instructions in the packaging.
